We have had loads of success with & oldie but a goodie lately….CHANGE UP
Its always really interesting when you pull out a great team building activity you haven’t used for a while, when I say oldie I am refereeing to my back ground in ABL (Adventure Based Learning). We call upon our past experices & tweak activities to meet our desired out comes.
We invite you to freestyle (mix it up & go with your group) & make it work for your next team meeting, conference energiser or ice breaker. Please do let us know how you got on team@pureoutdoors.co.nz
Time required: 30 – Hour (more if you love death by debrief)
Props: Set of Change up cards, make them yourself its easy, all you need is one card each numbered from 1 – your group size. Hot Tip, print them on card so SB’s can’t cheat & look at their numbers.
Framing Briefing – Think Freestyle, how can this team activity fit with my outcomes?
Front-load a little or a lot, your call ……….Each of you will be given a card. Please do not turn it over and look at it until I say a 2 letter word beginning with G & ending in O.
Your group will be given a series of challenges. After each challenge is identified, your group will have several opportunities to plan and find solutions. The goal is to execute the solution as efficiently and quickly as possible. Once you have had a chance to improve on your solution, a new challenge will be presented. Each time a change occurs, the group will attempt to develop a plan that will produce similar levels of productivity and efficiency as was exhibited during the previous problem.”
Facilitation ideas
1 Hand out a card to each person. (It doesn’t matter if the numbers selected are sequential, just so long as each person has a card.)
2 Remind people that the goal is to develop and implement a solution as quickly as possible and that they will be timed on their execution. Tell the group that they must signal you to tell you to stop the time once they have finished the task.
3 Tell people Team Challenge #1: turn your card over and line up in numerical order from smallest to largest number.
4 Tell the group the time on this attempt – this time is their first benchmark.
5 Ask the group to shuffle the cards by having each person trade cards at least 5 times with someone different. Once they get a card to keep, refrain from looking at it until told to do so. Give them a few minutes of planning time to refine their solution.
6 Remind the group that the challenge is the same as before, the numbers are the same; the only thing that is different is who is holding the number.
7 Give them the start signal and time the solution. Report the time to them.
8 Allow 1-2 more attempts until you think they have achieved a good time, shuffling the cards between each attempt.
Report the time to the group, then repeat rules 5-8 as appropriate.
Make a change by announcing Team Challenge #2: line up alphabetically by the first letter of the number on the card you hold. Say start and time the attempt.
Make another change by announcing Team Challenge #3: line up in two lines – odd numbers in one line, even numbers in the other – odds in descending order and evens in ascending order numerically.
Have fun with it – FREESTYLE & work with your groups needs.
